The Wind In The Willows

“The Mole was bewitched, entranced, fascinated. By the side of the river he trotted as one trots, when very small, by the side of a man who holds one spellbound by exciting stories; and when tired at last, he sat on the bank, while the river still chattered on to him, a babbling procession of the best stories in the world, sent from the heart of the earth to be told at last to the insatiable sea.”

I was such a fan of the TV series back in the day! Mr. Toad, Badger, Ratty and Mole going through all sorts of adventures in the British countryside... You can imagine how happy I was when I stumbled upon the book! Written by Kenneth Grahame in 1908, the story revolves around the friendship of a delightful bunch of ...animals. Well, animals that can speak, dress up, eat, drink, drive and smoke among other things... By giving human attributes to his characters, as well as keeping some of their "natural" ones, Grahame created an imaginary - yet fully operating society - of forest animals.

Mr. Toad is impulsive, self-centered and spoiled whilst Ratty (the water rat) is goodhearted, bohemian and artistic. Badger is lonesome, anti-social and persistent while my personal favorite, Mole, is a bit naive but fiercely loyal and brave. They might be different but, as all true BFF's, they stick together and manage to successfully overcome every obstacle that comes their way. Yeah, it's supposed to be a children's book but it's pretty enjoyable and quite funny even for "adults". If you come across it at the bookstore, just grab it!

Have a lovely day!
