Animal Farm

“Man is the only creature that consumes without producing. He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plough, he cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits. Yet he is lord of all the animals. He sets them to work, he gives back to them the bare minimum that will prevent them from starving, and the rest he keeps for himself.”

"All animals are equal. But some animals are more equal than others". If you still haven't read George Orwell's novel "Animal Farm", please do. Even though it was published in 1945, it's still as contemporary as f**k. Set in Manor Farm in England, it narrates the story of a revolution gone awry. An animal revolution that is... When Old Major, an old and respectable pig, gives a revolutionary speech before he dies, the farm animals are motivated to revolt against the cruel ruling of their masters. Two pigs lead the revolution: Snowball and Napoleon. After managing to overthrow their human master, Farmer Jones, they renamed "Manor Farm" to "Animal Farm" and set a list of seven rules not to be broken. Everybody worked together in order to provide for the farm and they all gathered once a week to decide upon the farm's future. So far it sounds ideal, right? Well... not quite.

You see... Napoleon had the hots for power. The ultimate power. Thus, he chased Snowball out of the farm with the help of nine huge dogs that were secretly trained by him ever since they were puppies. He was now the ultimate leader. The one to decide on everything that had to take place on the farm. No further animal assemblies would be held. He and his loyal followers became the only authority. I will not tell you how the book ends. You have to read it! What I have to tell you is that it's a political satire taking aim at Stalin's regime in the former USSR. Yes, Napoleon was Stalin. Snowball was Trotsky. Farmer Jones was Tsar Nicholas II. Old Major was Marx/Lenin. The personally trained dogs were representing the KGB and Stalin's devoted followers (who would stop at nothing). Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Have a lovely day!
