The Family Fang

“He felt certain that he was a failure, every artistic endeavor ending with his own surprise at how little had come from it. Perhaps that was how life worked, the expectation of success after each failure the engine that kept the world turning. Perhaps retrogression was an artistic endeavor in itself. Perhaps he might sink so far that he would find himself, somehow, returned to the surface.”

I should start by saying that this week's book got the thumbs up from one of my favorite writers: Nick Hornby. It's funny, it's smart, it's touching, it's melancholic... Kevin Wilson's "The Family Fang" is truly a great read! As you might have guessed, it's about a (rather peculiar) family and even though they're called Fang they're not vampires. Caleb and Camille Fang are famous performance artists and they're utterly devoted to their art. Their children, Annie and Buster, hate it. Their parents call them Child A and Child B respectively and use them as associates or to put it more bluntly as props. What do they do? Well, they choose crowded public places like shopping malls to create chaotic situations and film the whole outcome. Kinda like Candid Camera or Punked but nobody knows it's a performance but them...

Going back and forth from the 80's till the late '00s, we get to experience the craziness of being a member of the Fang family and the repercussions it has on the children's lives and behavior. When Annie (now an aspiring actress) and Buster (writer/journalist) come back to their parents house in order to escape their reality because of some pretty bad life decisions, everything is about to change. One day Caleb and Camille disappear while on a trip. The police say they're probably the victims of a serial killer but Annie and Buster believe it's just one of their parents' "artful" plots. Are they truly murdered or are they taking their art one step too far? Intrigued? I bet you are! I must add that Nicole Kidman's production company bought the rights to the book in order to be made into a movie... Woo Hoo!

Have a lovely day!
