The Cider House Rules
"It's natural to want someone you love to do what you want, or what you think would be good for them, but you have to let everything happen to them. You can't interfere with people you love any more than you're supposed to interfere with people you don't even know."
John Irving's lead character in the novel "The Cider House Rules" is a fascinating orphan who discovers the world outside the orphanage at the not-so-tender age of 18. You see... Homer didn't want to leave the orphanage of St.Cloud's and no matter how many times he was adopted, he always came back. Doctor Wilbur Larch - the orphanage's director, an ether addict and a secret abortionist - teaches Homer medicine, hoping that one day he will be his successor. But when a beautiful young couple, Wally and Candy, come to St.Cloud's to have an abortion, Homer decides to leave with them. Their destination? Wally's family business "Ocean View Orchards".
What will their fate be? Will Homer go back to the orphanage and assume Dr.Larch's position? Is Wally dead or just missing? Are the rules meant for breaking? How many apples can you hold in one hand?
Have a lovely day!
