“When it comes to dressing well, American culture is so self-fulfilled that it has not only disregarded this courtesy of self-presentation, but has turned that disregard into a virtue. "We are too superior/busy/cool/not-uptight to bother about how we look to other people, and so we can wear pajamas to school and underwear to the mall.”
Ifemelu and Obinze fall in love in their teens and have big plans for their future but when Nigeria falls under military dicatorship, things are bound to go awry. Ifemelu manages to immigrate to America to study and even though Obinze promises to follow her shortly after, he is denied access post-9/11. They both go their seperate ways until 15 years later they are both back in newly democratic Nigeria and have to decide whether they can salvage their long lost relationship or will continue to go their separate ways.
A fascinating read tackling serious issues like immigration, racism, education with humour and warmth. Such a beautiful and tender book!
Have a lovely day!
