William Somerset Maugham's novel Up At The Villa (paperback by Vintage Books) takes place in 1930's Florence, Italy, and tells the story of Mary, a 30-year-old beautiful young widow. Mary is spending her summer at a friends' villa contemplating whether to accept a marriage proposal from a dear family friend.
